“I was like, ‘There’s a child inside here, what if she is allergic to everything like I was?” she recalls today. Then, when Jessica was pregnant in 2008, she had a severe allergic reaction to a laundry detergent designed for babies, which frightened her. Suffering from chronic allergies, asthma, regular bouts of pneumonia, and even partially collapsed lungs as a child, Jessica was “in the hospital a lot.” Her mother also had cancer when she was only 22. Initially selling baby and household cleaning products, it has now ballooned to incorporate beauty, wellness and clothing ranges. It was Jessica’s own battles with ill health during childhood, and then again when she was pregnant with her first child Honor, that inspired her to found The Honest Company. But that’s not to say her journey has been without its struggles.
